Catherine Cress

Catherine obtained a PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia University (focusing on Cosmology from Radio Surveys) and worked at various research institutions around the world. In 2001, she returned to her native South Africa to help build the country, establishing Astronomy groups at UKZN, UWC and the Centre for High Performance Computing. She supervised over 30 postgraduate student projects and has published over 40 academic papers, receiving the Researcher of the Year award in 2016 from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. She has given over 100 outreach talks at schools, on TV etc. She is committed to making Astronomy relevant to South Africa.
