The fast survey speed of MeerKAT will allow astronomers to efficiently study very large volumes to probe important cosmological characteristics of the Universe. The MeerKAT Large Area Synoptic Survey (MeerKLASS) is a peopled projects aimed at using a method known as HI intensity mapping to map the large-scale structure of the Universe in three dimensions.  In so doing, MeerKLASS stands to provide the first-ever measurement of the baryon acoustic oscillations using the intensity mapping technique. BAOs are characteristic fluctuations in the observed mass distribution of the galaxy, caused by acoustic density waves in the very early Universe. MeerKLASS will provide powerful tests of dark energy models and medications to General Relativity.
